On location shoot utilising custom size LED screen & Unreal engine with camera tracking

Albion Online - Pre-production phase

We were approached by our returning client Ready Aim Fire to facilitate a live-action shoot for a well-known online RPG, featuring 3D environments designed by the client’s Unreal Engine team.

During pre-production, we conducted a recce where we loaded the client’s environments onto our system, tested performance, and showcased the 3D worlds on the LED stage. This allowed the production team to visualise scenes ahead of the shoot, ensuring that the physical set design would integrate seamlessly with the digital backdrops. It also helped confirm that the required framing and camera angles would be fully achievable within the capabilities of our LED setup.

Production phase - physical & virtual set builds

This production clearly demonstrated the importance of close collaboration between the virtual art department (VAD) and the physical set design teams in achieving a cohesive final look.

Each scene was crafted with seamless integration between physical and digital elements in mind. Incorporating set pieces, props, and attention to material details helped create a natural and believable result on camera.

There is sometimes a misconception that virtual production requires little or no physical set design, and that placing talent in front of an LED screen is enough. In practice, a successful frame depends on depth and layering across the environment, combining physical foreground elements with digital backgrounds and extensions.

This shoot was a strong example of how collaboration between real-world set design and virtual environments can elevate the final image and create a more cohesive on-screen world.
